Toyota Ventures is the San Francisco Bay Area-based venture capital arm of Toyota, managing over $800M in assets under management. Since our founding in 2017, we have been on a dedicated mission to discover what is next for Toyota by helping early-stage startups bring groundbreaking technologies and disruptive business models to market. With a portfolio of over 100 innovative companiesincluding leaders like Joby Aviation, AM Batteries, and Stoke Spacewe are expanding our team to include a passionate VC Associate. This role will specifically support the Toyota Ventures Frontier Fund, focusing on high-growth sectors such as artificial intelligence, advanced materials, automation, robotics, and space technology.

As a VC Associate, you will play a critical role in the investment lifecycle, from initial discovery to deal closure. We are looking for a professional who is not only a natural networker but is also deeply embedded in the startup ecosystem. You should have a sharp eye for emerging trends and the ability to identify the founders who are defining the future of deep tech. Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for driving the momentum of our investment pipeline through proactive engagement and rigorous analysis. Your core duties will include:

  • Proactively networking and participating in venture capital events, industry organizations, and startup ecosystems to build a robust pipeline of investment opportunities.
  • Generating high-quality deal flow by identifying and sourcing target companies that align with the Frontier Funds investment thesis.
  • Meeting with founders and executive teams to evaluate their technology, business models, and market potential.
  • Leading comprehensive due diligence processes, including competitive analyses and deep-dive research into specific industry sectors.
  • Preparing detailed investment memos and presenting well-reasoned recommendations to the Toyota Ventures Investment Committee.
  • Supporting the negotiation and closing of investment deals, including the review of legal documents and cap tables.
  • Authoring market research briefings and analyzing industry trends to keep the firm ahead of the curve in deep tech and climate solutions.
  • Collaborating with the Toyota Ventures platform team to provide ongoing strategic support to portfolio companies.

Qualifications

We are seeking an entrepreneurial-minded individual who combines technical curiosity with strong financial acumen. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • At least 4 years of relevant work experience, preferably in a venture capital role or in an operational capacity within a high-growth technology company.
  • A Bachelors degree in engineering, computer science, business, or a related field; a strong understanding of deep tech is essential.
  • Proven expertise in financial modeling, including the ability to digest financial statements and create complex cap tables.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • A high level of integrity and professionalism, with a proven track record of maintaining strict confidentiality and handling sensitive information.
  • An existing network within the startup and investor communities, with a focus on deep tech or automation.
  • The ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced, often ambiguous environment.
  • A passion for continuous learning and a genuine excitement for the technologies that are shaping the future.
