About the Role
Canopie is a digital maternal health company dedicated to transforming the perinatal experience through structured support, education, and seamless care navigation. We are currently seeking a Peer Specialist in Maternal Health to join our mission-driven team. In this role, you will bridge the gap between clinical care and personal experience, providing a more inclusive and responsive model of support for pregnant and postpartum individuals. By meeting members where they are in their journey, you will help foster a community of empowerment and understanding, ensuring no one has to navigate the challenges of parenthood alone.
As a Peer Specialist, you represent a vital link in the maternal care continuum. This role is built on the philosophy that decisions shaping the pregnancy and postpartum experience are deeply personal and benefit from real-world, lived understanding. You will create a safe, non-judgmental space for members to explore their options, normalize their emotions, and connect with resources that align with their unique values and circumstances. This is a unique opportunity to leverage your personal journey to make a profound impact on the lives of others while working within a collaborative, digital-first healthcare environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesYour primary objective is to provide high-quality, virtual peer support grounded in empathy and authenticity. You will manage a variety of tasks aimed at improving member engagement and wellbeing, including:
- Conducting virtual peer support sessions across pregnancy and postpartum stages, utilizing your lived experience to provide validation and encouragement.
- Sharing personal insights in a professional and appropriate manner to normalize perinatal transitions and reduce feelings of isolation among members.
- Managing proactive outreach and engagement via phone, video, and secure messaging using Canopie’s structured communication tools.
- Assisting members as they navigate common challenges such as identity shifts, emotional wellbeing, physical recovery, infant sleep, and returning to work.
- Identifying when a member's needs exceed the scope of peer support and following established escalation pathways to clinical or emergency services.
- Encouraging the use of Canopie’s ecosystem, including coaching, educational classes, and clinical resources, based on individual member goals.
- Maintaining meticulous and timely documentation of all member interactions within our secure digital platform.
- Participating in ongoing professional development, including clinical training, supervision, and peer consultation sessions.
We are looking for individuals who possess a balance of empathy, digital literacy, and the ability to maintain professional boundaries. The ideal candidate meets the following criteria:
- Required: Personal lived experience with pregnancy and/or the postpartum period within the last 3 to 5 years.
- Demonstrated ability to reflect on your own journey to support others in a balanced and therapeutic way.
- Previous experience in maternal health, community-based advocacy, caregiving, or formal peer support roles.
- High level of comfort with digital communication tools, including video conferencing platforms and messaging systems.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a warm, non-judgmental, and inclusive communication style.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote environment, demonstrating reliability and strong organizational skills.
- Preferred: Formal certification in peer support or training in perinatal mental health.
- Preferred: Experience working with diverse or underserved populations and a commitment to health equity.
- Preferred: Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is a significant advantage.
Canopie offers a supportive environment where your lived experience is valued as a core professional asset. Benefits of this role include:
- The flexibility of a fully remote, digital-first work environment.
- Access to comprehensive clinical training and ongoing professional supervision.
- The opportunity to contribute to a scalable model of equitable maternal healthcare.
- Collaborative peer consultation to prevent burnout and foster community among our specialists.
- A mission-driven culture focused on improving outcomes for families globally.
