About the Role

Crossing Hurdles is actively seeking a tenacious and meticulous Investigative Journalist to join our remote editorial team in a contract capacity. In an era where information is abundant but clarity is often scarce, your mission will be to cut through the noise, challenge prevailing narratives, and hold powerful institutions accountable through rigorous, evidence-based storytelling. We are looking for a dedicated professional who can navigate complex datasets, manage sensitive sources, and translate intricate findings into compelling narratives that resonate with a diverse audience. This role offers the unique opportunity to work on high-stakes projects with the flexibility of a remote schedule, allowing you to focus your expertise on stories that truly matter and drive meaningful social or political change.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead comprehensive investigative cycles from initial lead generation and source cultivation to final editorial publication, ensuring every detail is corroborated through multiple points of verification.
  • Utilize advanced digital forensic techniques and open-source intelligence (OSINT) to verify digital information and track complex social or financial transactions across international borders.
  • Liaise closely with legal experts and senior editors to ensure all reporting complies with international media laws and ethical standards to protect the organization and its sources.
  • Produce a variety of high-quality content formats, including long-form articles, multi-part investigative series, and interactive digital features that leverage multimedia elements for maximum engagement.
  • Maintain and expand a robust network of confidential sources, subject-matter experts, and whistleblowers while implementing strict data security protocols to safeguard sensitive information.
  • Participate in regular virtual editorial meetings to pitch innovative story ideas and provide status updates on ongoing investigations, ensuring transparency and collaboration within the remote team.

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, supplemented by a strong portfolio of impactful, published investigative work in reputable outlets.
  • Deep experience in utilizing the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and other public record request mechanisms to extract critical data from government agencies and private entities.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a proven ability to distill complex investigative findings into clear, engaging, and persuasive prose that is accessible to a general audience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in modern data journalism tools such as Excel, SQL, or specialized visualization software to identify and present patterns within large, unstructured datasets.
  • A high degree of professional skepticism and attention to detail, with the ability to remain objective and impartial while pursuing sensitive or controversial investigative leads.
  • A self-motivated and disciplined approach to remote work, with the proven ability to manage time effectively across multiple projects while meeting firm editorial deadlines.

Benefits
  • High degree of professional autonomy and flexibility, with commitment levels ranging from 10 to 40 hours per week depending on current project demands and your availability.
  • The opportunity to work at the forefront of modern journalism with a remote-first organization that values innovation, editorial integrity, and the pursuit of truth.
  • Access to a supportive network of veteran editors and investigative peers who provide mentorship and collaborative opportunities on large-scale, high-impact national stories.
  • Competitive contract compensation that recognizes the specialized nature of investigative reporting and the high level of research expertise required for successful outcomes.
  • A mission-driven work environment where your reporting has the potential to drive real-world change, influence public policy, and increase corporate and governmental accountability.
