About the Role

Horizon Asset Investments is seeking a sophisticated Front-End Developer to lead the evolution of our high-performance trading ecosystem. This is a critical role where you will be tasked with architecting and refining the user-facing interfaces that empower our traders and analysts to make split-second decisions in complex financial markets. You will bridge the gap between heavy data processing and intuitive design, ensuring that our proprietary platform remains responsive, reliable, and visually insightful under extreme load. As a remote-first organization, we value developers who take high levels of ownership and can communicate complex architectural trade-offs effectively within a lean, high-velocity team.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary mission is to build and maintain the cutting-edge front-end applications of our trading platform, ensuring seamless integration and elite performance.

  • Develop high-performance front-end applications using React 18 and the Next.js App Router while maintaining a clean, type-safe codebase.
  • Collaborate deeply with the Back-End Development Team and Project Managers to discuss architectural trade-offs, limitations, and performance optimizations.
  • Design and implement intricate multi-page layouts and workflows that prioritize user efficiency without sacrificing data depth.
  • Engineer and optimize advanced charting solutions and data visualizations using libraries such as TradingView or D3.js to support complex market analysis.
  • Manage real-time data streams via WebSockets and SSE, implementing sophisticated buffering and windowing strategies to prevent UI thrash.
  • Maintain the security and integrity of the platform through robust OIDC/JWT authentication flows and role-based access controls.
  • Continuously refine the UI/UX to ensure clarity, speed, and intuitive navigation for professional end-users.

Qualifications

We are looking for a technical specialist who understands the nuances of high-frequency data and desktop-class web application architecture.

  • Expert-level proficiency in React 18, Next.js (App Router), TypeScript, and TailwindCSS.
  • Deep understanding of state management for high-frequency data using Zustand, Redux Toolkit, or useSyncExternalStore.
  • Proven experience handling high-volume real-time data (thousands of updates per minute) and implementing backpressure or coalescing strategies.
  • Strong background in data visualization, specifically with professional charting libraries like TradingView Lightweight Charts or Highcharts.
  • Familiarity with performance profiling tools, Web Workers, and OffscreenCanvas to maintain a responsive main thread during heavy computation.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to thrive in a remote-first, asynchronous work environment.
  • A background in financial systems, trading concepts, or fintech is highly preferred but not mandatory.

Screening Questions

To apply, please include detailed responses (48 sentences each) to the following questions in your application. This is a mandatory part of our vetting process.

  • UI Migration Strategy: Select a core component like a Positions table or Equity chart. Explain how you would migrate it to the Next.js App Router, including your choices for Client vs. Server components and your proposed folder structure.
  • Real-Time Data Ingestion: Describe your approach to handling WebSockets for high-frequency updates. How do you manage authenticated reconnections and topic resubscriptions, and what specific production failures do you anticipate?
  • UI Thrash Prevention: With thousands of updates per minute, how would you implement buffering or windowing to keep the UI responsive? Mention your preferred state management and virtualization tools.
  • Charting Approach: Pick a specific financial chart type and explain your library choice, your strategy for update frequency, and how you mitigate performance risks.
  • Auth and Role Gating: How do you handle JWT refresh flows and WebSocket authentication? Explain your implementation for role-based gating (e.g., read-only vs. active trading permissions).
  • Remote Ownership: Provide an example of an ambiguous task you owned remotely. How do you communicate risk early and ensure your code doesn't create local optima that break the broader system?

Benefits

We provide a modern, async-first work environment designed for focus and high-impact engineering.

  • 100% remote position with flexible working hours.
  • A streamlined, async-focused hiring process that respects your time.
  • Paid, time-boxed work samples for finalists.
  • Opportunity to work on complex, low-latency financial technology with a modern stack.
  • Collaborative environment with minimal live meeting overhead.
