Key Responsibilities

As a Facilities Maintenance Technician, your primary objective is to manage the daily technical operations of city-owned properties. You will serve as the first line of defense against infrastructure deterioration and operational failures. Your daily tasks will involve a sophisticated blend of hands-on repair work and strategic maintenance planning. Specific duties include:

• Performing regular inspections and preventative maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to ensure compliance with safety regulations and building codes.
• Diagnosing and repairing complex issues related to HVAC systems, including boilers, air handling units, and cooling systems, to maintain optimal indoor air quality and climate control.
• Executing minor carpentry, masonry, and painting projects to preserve the aesthetic and functional quality of municipal facilities.
• Responding promptly to emergency repair requests and troubleshooting building system failures to minimize disruption to public services.
• Managing and documenting work orders through a digital maintenance management system, ensuring all activities are tracked and reported for budgetary purposes.
• Collaborating with external contractors and vendors for specialized repairs, ensuring that all third-party work meets the City�s high standards of quality and safety.
• Monitoring building automation systems (BAS) to optimize energy consumption and implement sustainable practices across the facility portfolio.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates must possess a strong technical foundation and a commitment to public service excellence. We are looking for an individual who is both technically proficient and capable of working independently in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

• A valid Red Seal certification in a relevant trade (e.g., Plumbing, Electrical, or HVAC) or a diploma in Building Systems Technician studies.
• Minimum of five years of experience in commercial or institutional facilities maintenance, with a proven track record of managing multi-site portfolios.
• Comprehensive knowledge of the British Columbia Building Code, Fire Code, and WorkSafeBC occupational health and safety regulations.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and complex equipment manuals.
• Strong computer literacy, including experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and basic administrative software.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide clear technical updates to non-technical stakeholders and members of the public.
• A valid Class 5 Driver�s License and a clean driving record, as travel between various city sites is required.
• Physical stamina and the ability to perform manual labor, including lifting heavy equipment and working at heights or in confined spaces when necessary.
